Former Rugby Football Union chief executive John Steele has been recruited by the Youth Sports Trust.

Steele lasted just nine months in his role at the RFU before being ousted last June following the bungled attempt to recruit a performance director. His departure came at the height of the in-fighting at Twickenham and was deemed a wrongful dismissal in the Blackett Report.

Former All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club chief executive Ian Ritchie was finally appointed as his long-term successor this month, after former RFU chairman Martyn Thomas and Stephen Brown had filled the role on an interim basis.

The Youth Sport Trust is a charity which has an aim of increasing PE and school sport opportunities for young people and is currently delivering a number of high profile sporting initiatives.

"It is an absolute privilege to be appointed Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust," said Steele, a former chief executive of UK Sport. "I have often looked on with admiration at the work of the Youth Sport Trust and a large part of my motivation for joining the organisation is it's exceptional record of delivery and expertise.

"I passionately believe that sport has a crucial part to play in the development of young people and I look forward to taking up this new challenge. Leading an organisation which is playing such an important role within this country's sporting landscape is an honour."
