Bath have secured the signing of London Wasps hooker Rob Webber on a three-year deal.
The 25-year-old was recently called into the EPS squad for the 2012 Six Nations and will hope to take his international bow against Scotland on Saturday. When he arrives at the West Country side next season, he will vie with current Bath hooker and fellow EPS member Lee Mears for a spot in the side.
For Bath, Webber will offer a key option in a department that has struggled this season. Their three hookers - Lee Mears, Pieter Dixon and Ross Batty - have all had time on the sidelines this term and Webber will be looking to realise his international ambitions at the West Country side - who also announced the re-signing of Nick Abendanon on Monday.
And Webber is relishing the chance to run out at the Rec. "I have loved my time at Wasps, but it is time to move on, and I am genuinely excited at the prospect of working with the squad and coaches at Bath," Webber said. "There seems to be a great ethos developing at the Club, both on and off the field, and it's one I'm looking forward to becoming part of."
Speaking of the signing, Bath's director of rugby Sir Ian McGeechan said: "Rob is a very skilful and exciting player. He has a great work ethic and attitude, comes to us with an already impressive skill-set, and still has a lot more potential. We are looking forward to helping him develop his game further, and feel he will fit in very well here at Bath."
But the news will come as a blow to Dai Young's Wasps who are said to be still awaiting news over a potential buyer at Adams Park. Young said: "We will be sad to say goodbye to Rob because he's been a key player for the Club developing into one of the senior voices in the squad. We were hoping to hold onto him and we made him a much improved contract offer but these decisions are up to the player at the end of the day. He goes with our very best wishes and I know he will give it his all in a Wasps shirt for the rest of the season."
