Newcastle Falcons have announced that back-row Mark Wilson has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract.

The 22-year-old has featured prominently for the Aviva Premiership side this season and although he had two years left to run on his current deal, the Falcons have rewarded the former England student's captain with a new contract.

Wilson claims that Jimmy Gopperth's decision to renew his contract at Kingston Park was one reason behind his new deal. "Our owner Semore Kurdi wants me to stay here and be a part of the club's future, and I was always keen to stay on board," Wilson said."I am happy in Newcastle, I am really enjoying my rugby with the Falcons and I am getting a lot first-team exposure.

"At my age that is vitally important, and the ambition of the club is there for everyone to see with guys like Jimmy Gopperth signing up for another three seasons."

The Falcons are now just six points off Wasps after their 19-10 win over London Irish on Saturday and Wilson claims that the introduction of Mike Ford and John Wells has been a huge boost at Kingston Park.

Wilson said: "They have boosted confidence around the place and have given me lots of feedback - that is what I like as a player. Regardless of what happens this season there is a great future in store here."
