Sir Ian McGeechan will team up with former UK Sport performance director Peter Keen to lead a review into elite rugby in England.

The duo will report to Rugby Football Union (RFU) chief Ian Ritchie, who intends to have solid foundations from which to build towards the Rugby World Cup in 2015.

McGeechan remains one of the most respected minds in rugby, having coached the British & Irish Lions on two winning tours as well as winning the Premiership and Heineken Cup with Wasps.

Keen oversaw Great Britain's rejuvenation as an Olympic power in Beijing four years ago and also helped to lay the groundwork for the 29 gold medals secured in the recent London games.

"I'm delighted we've got two outstanding individuals involved and this is a very positive move," Ritchie said. "We have one of the greatest rugby brains of modern times allied with one of the most respected performance experts Great Britain has produced, that experience of best practice at the very top of elite sport can only benefit us.

"Across the organisation we're continually looking at how we can do things better. In this case that means the best performance pathways, support mechanisms and programmes which ultimately result in better England teams. I know they're both very excited about their involvement and I'm looking forward to working with them closely."
