Former Wallabies star David Campese has been criticised by current and former players following a tweet which appeared to question whether women journalists should be writing about rugby.

The outspoken Campese is no stranger to controversy having recently criticised Wallabies boss Robbie Deans and claimed that the Kiwi coach was the "worst thing that has ever happened to Australian rugby". And is he once again facing scrutiny for his comments which this time focused on Sydney Morning Herald journalist Georgina Robinson.

Campese's tweet, which was later deleted, read: "Why does the smh get a girl to write about rugby. Growden who was a great jornio and now we have someone who has no idea about the game!" "Growden" is the newspaper's long-time rugby writer Greg Growden who recently took redundancy.

Wallabies skipper David Pocock hit back at Campese on Twitter saying: "Really sad to see journos attacked based on their gender. Or a grown woman referred to as a 'girl' #destroyingthejoint."

His views were also echoed by former Australia winger Wendell Sailor who said: "Well good morning to u Campo & I have to say r are on ur own with this comment it's 2012 champ."

After facing widespread criticism for his Tweet, Campese attempted to clarify his views saying: ''I was trying to say is that the coach is under pressure and sometimes males give it to the coach as some females go a lot easier on them."
