The Rugby Football Union has recruited Richard Shuttleworth as its new professional coach development manager.

Shuttleworth steps into the void left by the now departed Nigel Redman who joined the Worcester Warriors as their forwards coach in May. Shuttleworth will work alongside the various English domestic sides and will look to develop their coaches and he joins the RFU from the Australian Institute of Sport where he worked as their skill acquisition specialist since 2007.

"I am very excited to take on this role at such an exciting time for English rugby," Shuttleworth said. "I feel good things are happening at the RFU right now and to be part of a progressive and dynamic professional coach development team headed by Kevin Bowring is quite simply a fantastic opportunity for me.

"I am motivated to help coaches develop, innovate and optimise new and existing tools and strategies to enhance both the learning and performance of their players and I bring a huge passion for learning and skill acquisition to what I do. I have focussed my personal skill set on helping optimise the individual skills needed by each coach to develop more highly skilled, adaptive, creative and effective decision making players who are motivated to achieve success in their careers."

RFU professional rugby director Rob Andrew added: "Richard brings with him a diverse range of knowledge and experience from across a number of Olympic sports, Australian Football League, rugby league and rugby union. His focus on both the individual and team based development made him the standout candidate to replace Nigel."
