Wasps flyer Tom Varndell has his sights set on an England recall but concedes that he has not heard anything from the selectors.

Varndell is currently the top try-scorer in this season's Aviva Premiership with nine and third in the competition's overall standings. He last played for England back in 2008 but is in a rich vein of form and alongside Christian Wade, Wasps boast two of the Premiership's best finishers.

And Varndell is hopeful that his form will have not gone unnoticed when it comes to his international aspirations. "Of course I'm waiting for an England call up, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't," Varndell said. "I want to play for my country. I luckily have played some games already but on disappointing tours.

"We had a pretty average team then and it was a tough tour but that experience has definitely helped me as a player and I'd love to get that opportunity again but at the moment there are some good wingers knocking around the squad so we'll have to see what happens in the future. I've not had any contact with England. Nothing at all, not even a tweet, but as long as I perform, be consistent and keep scoring tries then they can't ignore me forever.

"I don't know if I'm in their thoughts at all but at the moment I'm just happy, I'm enjoying my rugby at Wasps. I want to keep doing well and that's the most important thing."

He is now just six tries off Steve Hanley's Premiership record of 75 and Varndell admits that the carrot of overtaking the former Sale winger at the top of the standings is on his mind.

"The try scoring record definitely gives me extra motivation in games," Varndell added. "It's always important to have targets in professional sport to keep you motivated. You obviously want to go out and do your best every week but that little bit of motivation is something that I need not to get out on the pitch but just to have that extra target, that extra incentive to score tries.

"Being top try scorer is fantastic but having Christian in the team, he also wants to be top try scorer as well and we rub off each other, we motivate each other, there's definitely that bit of competitiveness but we're always friendly. It's a healthy competition in the team."
