Northampton fullback Ben Foden insists he is willing to do whatever it takes to win back his place in the England team.

Foden was recalled to the England squad this month for their 2013 Six Nations campaign after missing the autumn internationals with an ankle injury. In his absence Saracens' Alex Goode and Harlequins' Mike Brown have both impressed at international level, leaving Foden with stiff competition to break back into Stuart Lancaster's starting XV.

"The way the autumn finished for England I always knew it was going to be very difficult for me to win my position back after spending 12 weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury," Foden wrote in the Daily Telegraph. "Guys like Mike Brown and Alex Goode have been playing well in the Premiership and it has made it even harder because they have been doing so well for their clubs."

Despite having played the majority of his career at fullback, Foden was shifted to left wing on England's tour of South Africa last summer to accommodate first Brown and then Goode at fullback. And with Goode adding an extra dimension to England's attacking game from fullback during the autumn, Foden is willing to fight it out for a place on the wing if necessary - though he still covets the No.15 shirt.

"Obviously first and foremost I would like to play full-back but I will do whatever England want me to do, whether that is to play on the wing, sit on the bench or to go back and play for Northampton for a couple of weeks to get my form back," he said.

"I just have to work hard and try to earn my place back. The big thing for me is that before the injury I worked so hard at being a rounded player who did not make many mistakes. My form did not vary much.

Foden was released by England to play in Northampton's Anglo-Welsh Cup victory over Gloucsester on Saturday. And the 27-year-old is confident he is fast approaching his best form.

"Confidence in myself to step and break tackles is big for me and with every game I play I am feeling more at ease with myself so it was good to get another game yesterday having been released to play by England."
