England have received a blow ahead of their tour to South America following the news Saracens duo Alex Goode and Joel Tomkins will miss the trip through injury.

Goode has suffered a shoulder injury while Tomkins has had a knock to his ankle. With the pair of backs out of action, England boss Stuart Lancaster has opted to draft in Northampton Saints fly-half Stephen Myler and centre Luther Burrell.

The duo are uncapped but with just one standout No.10 in the squad - Freddie Burns - Myler is in with a good shout of making his international debut in their two-Test series against the Pumas.

"Luther Burrell and Stephen Myler have both played well in the second half of the season and they've both got a great opportunity to put a marker down for the future on tour in Uruguay and Argentina," Lancaster said. "Our commiserations go to Alex Goode and Joel Tomkins. It's disappointing that they have to miss out but they have both had excellent seasons and I am sure they will be back in contention next season."

With nine players named in the squad for the South America tour playing in the Aviva Premiership final this weekend, Lancaster has opted to bolster his squad with uncapped duo Exeter Chiefs' Haydn Thomas and Sale Sharks lock Kearnan Myall who have joined the party ahead of their match with the Barbarians on Sunday.

Lancaster added: "This week it's good to have Haydn and Kearnan involved in the senior England environment ahead of what should be a great game against a very strong Barbarians team. They have both played well recently and deserve this opportunity."

England name their side for the Barbarians at lunchtime on Friday. They play a South American XV in Montevideo on June 2 before Tests against the Pumas in Salta and Buenos Aires on June 8 and 15.
