Diccon Edwards, who had a year remaining on his contract, has resigned as head coach of championship club Leeds Carnegie with immediate effect.

Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington told the BBC: "It's come as a big surprise to everybody. You'd have to ask Diccon why he has stepped down. It's all happened extremely quickly"

"Edwards was guarded about why the separation had come about," noted the Yorkshire Post, "but it is clear there was a breakdown of trust between the head coach and the club's hierarchy."

Director of rugby Chris Gibson will step in pending a new appointment.
