Oxford University club at centre of drink spiking controversy

A Oxford University rugby club circulated an email to its members suggesting they should spike their date's drinks.

Pembroke College Rugby Football Union Club members were told to pick a 'female fresher' as their date for an annual social and were also given a 'challenge', according to the Independent. The members were told to be "as clandestine as possible in your deed" and were told to "please bring TWO bottles of wine - one for yourself and one for your guest".

Social secretary Woo Kim then added in the email, which was entitled 'FREE P***Y': "You must open the bottle in advance, and include a substance of your choice. It may be spirits or food or anything you like." Another member was told to bring "a positive pregnancy test. This task shall be ongoing until you succeed."

The email has understandably caused outrage in Oxford with one Pembroke College student telling the newspaper: "I'm gobsmacked that at any stage this seemed like a good idea to the people sending these emails. It's not a joke, it's not something you can laugh off retrospectively."

A statement issued by the club said: "Pembroke Rugby Club accepts that the emails circulated earlier this week about our proposed Crew Date were entirely misguided and represent a serious case of poor judgement." They added the challenge was meant to be a "harmless drinking game joke, and was in no way intended to mean that the team member should lace their dates' drinks with anything illegal and/or to engage in any sexual abuse."
