England centre Billy Twelvetrees has admitted he was "really disappointed" with the way he played against Australia on Saturday.

Stuart Lancaster has already come out in support of his under-fire centre who looked to struggle against the Wallabies and was bulldozed for Matt Toomua's try. Twelvetrees is set to keep his place in the side for Saturday's game against Argentina despite Luther Burrell being retained in the squad and he hopes to make amends.

"I was extremely disappointed for letting the boys down. You've got a job to do for the team and I let them down there, let the shirt down too," Twelvetrees told the Telegraph. "I'm very critical of myself. I woke up on Sunday morning and I was really disappointed about the way I'd performed. Although we won, it was a personal thing for me that I expected to stand up and do better than that."

And even a member of Twelvetrees' family did not hold back in his criticism. He added: "Well, my parents and girlfriend were there and they'll always say you played well because they're your family, aren't they? They're always good at boosting me up," shrugged Twelvetrees. "Then one of my [three rugby-playing] brothers just said to me, 'Hey, don't worry about it, you played fine'.

"To which I had to say, 'Don't be stupid, I was rubbish!' and then even he had to laugh: 'Yes, you were s---! I could have done better!'"

Twelvetrees lined up alongside debutant Joel Tomkins and the former is optimistic the partnership can develop if given the opportunity. "Attacking-wise, I think as a centre partnership Joel and I have to stay patient. On a couple of occasions, we probably didn't use it as effectively as we could but it's still a learning curve for us. I'm quietly confident if we get the opportunity, we can execute well this weekend."
