RFU posts record £153m revenue

The Rugby Football Union has announced record revenue of just over £150m for the financial year of 2012-13.

The RFU's revenue sprung from £110.6m to £153.5m while their retained profit came in at £3.8m. The RFU also pumped just under £64m back into the game.

The revenue generated is far and away the most compared to the sport's other unions. The All Blacks recently released figures of £54m, while the Welsh Rugby Union collected £61m for the past year.

The figures were helped by three home games during the Six Nations and four during last season's autumn Test programme with Ticket sales rising from £13.3m to £33.9m.

"This was an outstanding year in which continued growth allowed us to make record investment directly with clubs and in operating the English game at all levels," RFU CEO Ian Ritchie said. "We have made significant strides across the board allowing us to invest an additional £3.5m in grassroots rugby, largely thanks to a busy calendar of Twickenham events.

"Our unsecured loan granted by new banking partner RBS is allowing us to upgrade Twickenham Stadium in readiness for our hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2015 and there is much to look forward to throughout the game."
