University rugby players in Preston have been disciplined after they were caught kissing a severed pig's head while naked near a bar in the city.

The Lancashire Evening Post claims the members of the University of Central Lancashire's rugby union team were seen in the car park behind bar Popworld and police officers were called to the scene. The players were carrying out an initiation ceremony.

The newspaper reports: "The actions are believed to have been part of a team 'Grandsons and Godfathers' event, that also included drinking spicy concoctions and apple bobbing in an inflatable pool full of onions and garlic."

A police spokesman said: "Police officers who were already in the city centre were alerted to activities in the rear yard of Popworld. When they got there, they found that men were undressed in public view, and were advised to calm down and get dressed. The licensee was also spoken to. There has been no further action."

The university's student union has since taken disciplinary action against the team.
