Edinburgh winger Tom Brown is due to be back in action by October after being told he does not need surgery on a knee injury sustained in May.

Brown damaged knee ligaments in Edinburgh's penultimate match of the season, a 55-12 defeat by Munster at Meggetland. Fears that he would require surgery have been allayed, although his comeback has been delayed by an appendix operation.

Despite the good news on Brown's progress, Edinburgh will be without six players for the start of the season. Joining Brown on the unavailable list are Jack Cuthbert, Mike Coman, Willem Nel, Matt Scott, and Allan Dell.

Full-back Cuthbert also sustained knee ligament damage but does not require surgery, while back-row Coman and prop Nel have undergone knee operations. All three should be available by September.

Centre Scott had an operation to correct a shoulder problem sustained against Leinster in the final game of the season and should return in December. Prop Dell underwent surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle and is expected to be available for selection around October.
