Moseley contemplate changing name

One of England's oldest clubs Moseley are contemplating changing their name to include Birmingham.

With the 2015 Rugby World Cup seeing some of the Pool matches played at Villa Park, reports in the Birmingham Mail claim Moseley are contemplating changing their name in time for the tournament. The new name for their club would be Birmingham Moseley, something that was proposed during their AGM on Monday, and it has been welcomed by Peter Grace, chairman of the Birmingham Rugby Partnership.

"Personally I am totally supportive of it," Grace told the Birmingham Mail. "I think it would be good for what we are trying to achieve with our World Cup legacy plan. If we are going to have Premiership rugby in this city then we do need to be Birmingham-led."

The proposal is unlikely to receive such optimism at Birmingham & Solihull. Their chairmen in the past have opposed any potential name change at their rivals but the current man at the helm, Chris Loughran, is withholding judgement until anything concentrate comes to fruition.

"Personally I wouldn't lose any sleep over it but I am pretty confident there will be people in our club who will feel quite needled. Memories and allegiances run deep. If by putting Birmingham into their name they can attract sufficient funding to really progress then good luck to them but our experience would suggest that's not necessarily guaranteed. But there is an RFU protocol to go through and we'll make an official response at that time."
