England captain Katy Mclean saluted "world-class" Emily Scarratt in the wake of their 21-9 win over Canada in the World Cup final.

England's triumph saw them end 20 years of hurt as they emulated the 1994 World Cup-winning side. For England, Danielle Waterman and Emily Scarratt scored the tries that helped them towards their victory but it was the boot of Scarratt that kept the scoreboard ticking over as she finished the game with 16 points.

Captain Mclean praised her outside centre following the final, telling Sky Sports: "She's a phenomenal player, world class and world class players need a world class stage and that's what she got today. She delivered for England."

And Mclean also paid tribute to the team's support staff. "That group of girls and staff deserve everything we've got today. We've worked so hard for this and there are so many great legends that have gone before us that haven't won in an England shirt and that's for all of them who are here today. This is all about the England rugby family; it's amazing.

"It started years ago with the people that have brought us here, our family and friends. We've had to work today, Canada were fantastic and it's amazing to think we've done it."

For Canada, they will take heart from a hugely impressive tournament with winger Magali Harvey crowned Women's Player of the Year following their final. Captain Kelly Russell was superb throughout the tournament and she

"It was a big physical effort and I'm so proud of the girls, they put everything they had into it. All credit to England, they were the better team today."

She added: "This team's been together for a year and we've become so close, like a family. I'm so proud of the girls and the staff and it's been a great ride."
