Stuart Lancaster got England's substitutions wrong against Wales, Mark Cueto writes

England 25-28 Wales (Australia only)

It's the morning after England's tight 28-25 defeat to Wales, and I'm still massively disappointed. England had so many opportunities to put that game to bed, and when you're 16-6 up at half-time, there is no excuse for losing.

You've got to give Wales credit for the way they never gave up, though, and it was a moment of magic that won the game with Gareth Davies' try. They had bad luck with injuries in the build-up to the match, and bad luck again in last night's game, so fair play to them. You just couldn't see a win for that Welsh team, but they found a way.

England's substitutions were wrong. I think we were unlucky losing Courtney Lawes, Billy Vunipola and Ben Youngs to injury, and I think the Welsh started to get an upper hand after they went off. Then coach Stuart Lancaster took off Tom Youngs and Sam Burgess for tactical reasons and England seemed to lose impetus. Last week, the bench coming on really secured the win, but against Wales I think the subs potentially helped lose the game. It was too early in the game for me, and I think it really made a difference.

Lancaster has already come out and supported the decision to kick for the corner when England were three points down, and I agree. You've got to back it, and I don't think you can read too much into it. Even if we draw, we still need a win against Australia, whereas if that lineout had worked, England's task would have been so much easier. It wasn't a gimme kick anyway, so they went for it and you just have to back your captain and trust the team. Decisions like that aren't the problem, but the penalty count against England was, especially at the start - the first three penalties went against England, and that helped get the Welsh up for it more.

But with all that said and done, it's only one loss, and thankfully it doesn't mean the end of the World Cup. There are plenty of teams who have lost a game in their pool and have gone on to still go through. The nature of our pool just makes it harder. We lost 36-0 to South Africa in 2007 and managed to regroup, so it is possible. This is a different loss but there will be a similar feeling of deflation.

Lancaster will make them watch the video early in the week and then put the Wales game to bed. There's not a huge amount of point dwelling on it, because you're not going to change your gameplan and playing style at this point. Just see what didn't go well, then move on and make sure everyone is fresh -- physically and mentally -- for the challenge of beating Australia. Defeat is not an option, England are playing knockout rugby now.
