Wasps have failed with an appeal against the length of the ban handed to fly-half Jimmy Gopperth for striking Leicester's Mathew Tait.

Gopperth was sent to the sin bin in the second half of Sunday's match after colliding with Tigers back Tait in mid-air as they attempted to catch a kick.

He admitted the striking offence in a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday but Wasps challenged the three-week suspension handed down.

The Rugby Football Union said in a statement on Thursday: "The appeal by Wasps over the length of the sanction given to Jimmy Gopperth has been dismissed this evening."
