Sonny Bill Williams is a step closer to making his first appearance for the New Zealand Sevens after being included in an extended squad for next weekend's HSBC World Series stop in Wellington.

Williams has been training with Gordon Tietjens' squad in recent times and has now been included in a 22-man group that will assemble in Auckland on Thursday.

Tietjens will then name his final 12-man outfit for the Westpac Stadium leg next Monday.

Williams will be desperate to make his debut next weekend having missed out on the two previous tournaments in Dubai and Cape Town. The code-hopper has committed himself to the shorter format of the game in a bid to earn a place at the Rio di Janeiro Olympics.

Extended squad:

Kurt Baker, Dylan Collier, Sam Dickson, Akira Ioane, Rieko Ioane, Gillies Kaka, Antonio Kiri Kiri, Ben Lam, Josh Van Lieshout, Tim Mikkelson, Sione Molia Lewis Ormond, Augustine Pulu, Billy Ropiha, Ardie Savea, Teddy Stanaway, Isaac Te Aute, Isaac Te Tamaki, Beaudein Waaka, Regan Ware, Sonny Bill Williams, Joe Webber.
