Former Lion backs Andrew's Plan
May 9, 2000

Former Wales and Lions international and Scrum columnist John Taylor believes the plans for the future of English rugby laid down by Rob Andrew are the obvious choice for the leading owners in the game.

The English First Division Rugby Clubs meet next week to finally decide the future of the game and Taylor, speaking in his exclusive Scrum column, states that Andrew's plan is the only secure financial option.

Taylor says, "They (the clubs) have found the perfect Sugar Daddy to pick-up their crippling wage bills and can think about breaking even or better for the first time."

On the on going saga Taylor comments, "That £1.8 million per club from the RFU coffers (and rising) has to be a great result and they should snap it up before the undoubted opposition within the governing body has a chance to get organised."

When discussing what is on offer Taylor believes that the owners have, "achieved everything they have always wanted and more" and refers to their original submission to the RFU Commission in October 1995.

He concludes that in these days of financial insecurity where the market rate for English Club Rugby is still unsure, the clubs should give Andrew's Plan the greenlight.
