Australian Geoff Richards to coach England women
July 16, 2000

The RFUW have offered the job of England women's coach to Geoffrey Richards, an Englishman who won three caps for Australia as a fullback. The appointment is still unofficial as Richards has not yet signed the £35,000 contract, but a press announcement is likely later this week.

The job was advertised early this summer when Sport England made a substantial amount of funding available to the RFUW for coaching staff.Current England coach Peter Kennedy also applied for the new paid position, but was pipped to the post by Richards, who will now lead England's 2002 World Cup campaign.

Richards, who has an English parent, won his three caps for Australia against New Zealand (2) and France between 1978 and 1981. For the past three years he has worked as the Assistant Coach of the Australian Under-21 men and as part of the Australian Institute for Sport Rugby scholarship programme in Brisbane.

Richards also has previous experience coaching women, having done some work with the Australian women's 1998 World Cup squad and with the Australian womens sevens squad. His vast experience of top level men's rugby in Australia combined with the opportunity to pursue the task full time should bring real benefits to the women's game in this country.
