Wasps' Nigel Melville has been appointed England Under-21 manager on a part-time basis.

The Wasps director of rugby takes charge of the under-21 team immediately and has the job of preparing his players for a tough away match against Wales in February.

Melville will be involved in the selection of coaches for the under-21s and will continue his work with Wasps.

``I was delighted to be offered the job and I'm looking forward to extending my role with the RFU (Rugby Football Union) and to what will be a major challenge in my career,'' said Melville who played 13 times for England, including seven times as captain.

Fran Cotton, chairman of Club England, said: ``Nigel's appointment underlines our commitment to putting in place a strong structure for England throughout all our representative sides, and the selection process for further appointments for the A team and under-21s is continuing.

``Nigel's experience as a player and as director of rugby at London Wasps will prove invaluable, and we look forward to a productive partnership during the forthcoming season.

``I would like to thank London Wasps for their support and co-operation in this important appointment for the union.''
