Contepomi considers Bristol switch
September 13, 2000

Argentinian international Felipe Contepomi will have talks with Premiership club Bristol with a view to linking-up with fellow countrymen Agustin Pichot and Eduardo Simone.

Contepomi has played 13 Tests for Argentina, having also played at under-19, under-21, Sevens and A levels. His preferred position is fly-half, though he has played in the centre and at full-back for the Pumas.

Pichot, the Bristol skipper, approached Contepomi about a possible move during the Pumas' summer tour to Australia, but the 23-year-old wants to complete the final year of his medical studies.

"I have studied hard for the past four years and I don't want to waste that," said Contepomi

"I have already received an offer from a club in Ireland, who have arranged for a University place, but I want to play in the Premiership because it is one of the best leagues in the world."

Bristol have lost their last four league games, after beating newcomers Rotherham on the opening weekend of the season, and are one off the foot of the table.

After Sunday's defeat by London Irish, player-coach Dean Ryan said: "We need to face facts, as a club we don't have enough players of quality to win Premiership matches."

Ryan said that the side lack sufficient decision makers on the field - leaving a lot to himself and Pichot.

However, Contepomi's abilities have certainly impressed the former England international.

"We need a fly-half and I was very impressed a couple of months ago when Pichot and Contepomi played a fabulous game as half-backs against the Wallabies," said Ryan last month.

"He is the number 10 that we want to have for this season and the club approached him last week. Now Bristol is trying to find all the requirements for Contepomi because he is the man that I want."

Meanwhile, Ryan has refuted claims that they are close to completing a deal with Castres for French international full-back Ugo Mola to join the west country side on loan for one year.

Ryan added: "We were contacted about Mola and have yet to decide whether to open discussions with Castres. It is still very early days as far as we are concerned."

One Saturday Bristol travel to the Stoop to play Harlequins, who are just above them in the table.

The London side will include 33-year-old Australian flanker David Wilson on his debut for his club.

Quins coach Richard Hill, the former Bath and England scrum-half, has called for an improvement in his side's discipline after having had players sin-binned in four of their five games this season.

"Only against Rotherham, our sole win so far, did we manage to keep 15 players on the pitch and it's a problem we have to sort out because it's hurting us badly," said Hill.

"We are competing well in matches, but opposition teams are punishing us when we are reduced by sin-binning incidents.

"We have let ourselves down because the good work we have achieved in attack has been undermined and it cannot go on.

"We conceded 17 points when two players went into the bin against Bath, we went behind with a man in the bin against Northampton and it was the same story in the match with Wasps."
