Leicester seek more prize money from ERC
Dublin

Leicester Tigers are to insist on peeking a look at the books of European Cup Rugby after it was revealed that the prize money should they win the Heineken Cup would not even cover the club's costs.

The English champions have said the £25,000 on offer would leave them out of pocket following the tip to Paris to meet Stade Francais in the Parc des Princes on May 19.

The Leicester Mercury has reported that managing director David Clayton will have talks with ERC in Dublin regarding several aspects of the game including offering cheaper tickets for children.

He said he wanted to get the prize money increased, this year or next, to ensure that no club that took part in the final ended out of pocket as a result.

"Honour and glory is great, but it doesn't pay the bills," said Clayton. "We are going to want to look at the ERC accounts."

Leicester chief executive, Peter Wheeler, added: "We will try and get more money for players expenses, marketing, that sort of thing. But we are not holding our breath."

The good news for the Tigers is that they will receive £100,000 from not playing the Barbarians at the end of the season after they made way for the English to meet the invitation side at Twickenham.

Today Dean Richards said he was pleased about the eight Leicester players who were picked to tour with England this summer although, as with the Lions selection last week he said he thought there were players, like Andy Johnson, brother of Lions captain, martin, who were unlucky to miss out.
