Narbonne coach in confident mood

Narbonne coach Pierre Arrambide is confident his side can end a 10-year trophy drought with victory over Harlequins in Sunday's European Shield.

Narbonne travel to the Madejski stadium in Reading from the south-east of France looking to claim their first piece of silverware since winning the Challenge Yves du Manoir in three consecutive seasons in the early 90s.

With a place in next season's Heineken Cup at stake, the rewards are high for both clubs.

``It will be a big plus for the club (to win the shield), both in a sporting and financial sense. It has been 10 years since the players have won anything but they are hopefully about to change that,'' Arrambide said.

Narbonne, who just missed out on a quarter-final place in the French championship, can draw comfort from the fact that Harlequins also have to go back a decade to remember their last trophy.

Despite that record, Arrambide is aware that the all-star English side, boasting such international talents as David Wilson, Keith Wood, Will Greenwood and Jason Leonard, will start as favourites.

``They (Harlequins) are the complete team,'' Arrambide said on rugbyrama.com.

``They have many very good individual players but they also play well together as a team.

``Keeping our discipline will be very important for us. To win we must stop them from playing and to do this we must defend very solidly.''

Narbonne warmed up for Sunday's clash with a 56-21 thrashing of La Rochelle last weekend as they finished the French championship fifth in Pool Two two points off a place in the play-offs but only four off the relegation zone.

Arrambide admitted that the fight to preserve their top flight status has affected their preparations for this game.

He said: ``We have only had a week to analyse their game as we have been concentrating on keeping our place in the top flight.

``Their (Harlequins) strong points are the set pieces but I think that we are capable of winning.

``In any case, a final is there to be won.''
