Leicester lead 24 for Heineken Cup
June 4, 2001

The line-up for the 2001/2 Heineken Cup is now complete, with three out of four of last season's semi-finalists ready for another crack at Europe's premier club and provincial competition.

New champions Leicester lead the six English qualifiers, earning No 1 seeding by winning the Heineken Cup final in Paris.

But beaten finalists Stade Français had to scrape through as the best losing quarter-finalist in their domestic Championship, in which Toulouse and Montferrand will contest the final at Stade de France on Saturday 9 June.

Munster qualified months ago by winning the Irish Inter-provincial Championship, but Gloucester miss out this time, and will go instead into the European Shield after finishing only seventh in England's Zurich Premiership.

The 24 Heineken Cup teams for 2001/2:

ENGLAND (6): Leicester, Wasps, Bath, Harlequins, Northampton, Newcastle
FRANCE (6): Castres and Montferrand (winners of Poules 1 and 2 in the French Championship), plus Toulouse and Biarritz, who reached the semi-finals of the French Championship play-offs, and the best losing quarter-finalists, Stade Français and Perpignan
IRELAND (3): Munster, Ulster, Leinster
ITALY (2): Benetton Treviso, Calvisano
SCOTLAND (2): Glasgow Caledonians, Edinburgh Reivers
WALES (5): Swansea, Cardiff, Llanelli, Newport, Bridgend
