Budge appointed Saints skipper
June 5, 2001

Northampton have appointed flanker Budge Pountney club captain for the next season.

Pountney, who has captained Scotland, began his first class career at Saints whilst studying at Bedford College.

Director of Rugby, John Steele said: "Budge started at this club in our junior teams and has developed and progressed to become an international captain.

"There is nobody better equiped than Budge to captain the side. He has the players' and supporters' respect for what he has acheived and I am sure he will be a successful leader of what is now a very young squad."

Pountney, considered by many to be unlucky to have missed out on Lions selection, takes over the captaincy from Pat Lam.

"It is such a great honour to be asked," Pountney said. "I was completely shocked but also excited.

"My aim will basically be to win as many games as we can. We have got quite a young squad now and a little bit of guidance may be needed to make sure we are going in the right direction".
