Brumbies v Tigers clash edges nearer
July 6, 2001

The prospect of the Super 12 champions, the ACT Brumbies, taking on the Heineken Cup holders, the Leicester Tigers has moved a step closer to fruition.

The mouth watering clash of the best of both hemispheres is an idea that has circulated for some time but it is hoped it will begin next year.

Talkls are underway between the Heineken Cup organisers and officials Down Under for a possible showdown in February.

"The objective is for the Brumbies and Leicester to play early next year, probably in January or February," said Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill.

"Pre-season games for the Australian Super 12 sides (Brumbies, Queensland Reds and New South Wales Waratahs) start in February. It would make sense to have the inaugural match in Europe."

The fixture is a natural extension of both Heineken Cup and Super 12 competitions, although fitting it in to an already crammed English schedule will be a challenge.

Two Six Nations Championship rounds dominate next February's programme, with Leicester also having Premiership games scheduled against Saracens and Northampton.
