Sale flanker quits top flight
July 9, 2001

Sale Sharks flanker Andy Morris, who was once in the England Under 21 squad alongside players like Lawrence Dallaglio, Tony Diprose and Richard Hill, has decided to retire from top class rugby.

He was one of the few remaining professionals at Sale who had combined rugby with a career outside the game.

After making his Sale debut in 1994, having previously played for Sheffield, Nottingham and his home town club, Blackburn, the 29-year-old made 93 senior appearances, mostly at openside.

But he resolutely refused to ``give up the day job'' in the financial sector to become a full time rugby player and successfully combined the two careers.

Morris had been in discussions about renewing his contract at Sale but said he had decided to retire from the top end of the game.

He said: ``There is more to life than professional rugby and I would like to continue playing the game away from the Premiership. My career is very important to me and playing rugby has always been my recreation.

''I have always lived for Saturdays because I love the game but I would have been bored to death just training and hanging around all week as a full time professional.''
