Tigers set free in Leicester
July 13, 2001

The all-conquering Leicester Tigers are used to being honoured on the playing fields of Twickenham, Stade France and Welford Road but last night it was Leicester City Council chambers where their latest accolade was bestowed.

The team has been made a freeman of the city in recognition of their unprecedented triple last season, capturing the Zurich Premiership and Championship and the Europe's top honour, the Heineken Cup in the final game of the season.

Tigers chief executive Peter Wheeler said today: "I'm delighted. I think the club as a whole and certainly the team in particular have worked very hard in the rugby world to promote Leicester around the UK, Europe and the world. To get recognition of that effort from the city council is something we would be very pleased and proud to be awarded.

On the same night renowned TV dietician and fitness expert Rosemery Conly and retired businessman and charity fundraiser Dr Frank May were also made freemen of the city.
