White and Bristol bury the hatchet
August 24, 2001

England prop Julian White has resolved his contractual differences with Premiership club Bristol and will report for training with the Shoguns on Monday.

In a joint statement White and the club say that they have resolved their differences amicably and the 28-year-old international is committed to being a Bristol player for the next three years.

"Julian appreciates the faith that Bristol have shown in him and after discussions with head coach Dean Ryan and with the involvement of Damian Hopley, chairman of the Professional Rugby Players' Association, he is looking forward to commencing training with the club on Monday," said the statement.

"Bristol Shoguns and Julian are looking forward to a successful domestic and European Shield campaign which will provide a great platform for Julian to cement his place in the England team."

White instigated legal proceeding against Bristol seeking to be released from his contract, which he agreed 12 months ago, claiming that there was an opt-out clause.

But Judge Havelock-Allan QC, sitting in the Bristol Mercantile Court, last week reaffirmed his decision given verbally earlier this month, that the former Saracens player was a Bristol player and the club could register him as such.

White was ordered to pay around £28,000 in costs to Bristol Shoguns after his failed bid but still faces legal action early next year from Mike Burton, his former agent, who is claiming £28,000 in lost fees for negotiating the deal.

The club have declined to disclose whether they will press White for the payment of their costs or the £15,000 advance they made to him on his £80,000-per-year contract.

Whether White will feature in Bristol's opening Premiership game at home to Sale Sharks on Sunday, September 2, remains unclear as he has not be training with Bristol and also missed their pre-season tour to Argentina.
