Newport await SARFU decision
August 29, 2001

The South African Rugby Union will hold a meeting in Cape Town on Thursday to discuss the future of Newport target Joost van der Westhuizen.

South African Test scrum-half van der Westhuizen, capped 75 times, has already agreed a one-year contract with Newport.

But the SARFU have now requested a player development fee for him.

On top of that, it is understood van der Westhuizen, whose existing SARFU contract expires in December, has come under considerable pressure to continue playing in South Africa during the build-up towards World Cup 2003.

The Springbok will be present at the meeting along with his agent Craig Livingstone and SARFU officials.

Newport senior vice president Tony Brown said today: "This meeting has been called to resolve the matter once and for all.

"I have spoken to Joost and he has expressed his desire to come to Newport. I just hope we can work this whole thing out and we see Joost in Rodney Parade before too long."
