Davies makes changes for Tykes
September 8, 2001

Leeds may have stunned the Premiership with their victory over Bath last weekend but it has not stopped director of rugby Phil Davies from making changes for Sunday's trip to fellow first-day winners London Irish.

And there is likely to be another new arrival at Headingley next week as the Yorkshiremen gear up for life in the top flight.

Scotland centre Jamie Mayer stands down against the Exiles, with Tristan Davies earning his chance from the replacements' bench as the Tykes bid to extend their winning start to Premiership life.

"Tristan played well off the bench last week and deserves his chance," said Davies.

Veteran fly-half Stephen Bachop was in outstanding form last week and will look to continue that against the club where he spent two successful seasons before moving north.

Number eight Isaac Feaunati is another Exiles old-boy looking to make an impression as the Tykes take their first trip to the Madejski Stadium.

"The result against Bath was obviously great but we now need to build on it," added Davies.

"Tomorrow's game presents another challenge for us to deal with.

"It will be a big game for Steve and Isaac against their former club.

"Steve has been great for us and is a big help in the coaching department. His experience at this level is invaluable."

Another former London Irish man, prop Kristyan Fullman, is denied a battle against his former team-mates but is expected to tie up a three-year deal with the Premiership newcomers next week.

Leeds have been looking at alternatives after Springbok front-row Cobus Visagie opted against a move to England in the build-up to last weekend's win and with Fullman looking set for a stint on the Bristol bench after England's Julian White committed himself to the west country outfit, the Tykes swooped.

"I am in my prime now and I need regular Premiership rugby," said the Gloucester born prop.

"Leeds showed against Bath last week that they are going to be no one's pushover and I can't wait to meet my new team mates."

Exiles coach Brendan Venter also marked his first top flight game in charge with an unexpected win, 35-20 at European Shield winners Harlequins.

The former Springbok rotates his entire front-row, fellow countryman Naka Drotske among those standing down.

Irish are still without Kevin Brennan (broken ankle), Nnandi Ezulike (knee) and Conor O'Shea (ankle), but will be looking to the boot of stand-off Barry Everitt and the speed of wing duo Jarrod Cunningham and Paul Sackey to ensure a second successive win.
