Melville angered by 'basic errors'
September 8, 2001

London Wasps director of rugby Nigel Melville accused his side of making "basic errors" after losing 45-15 at Welford Road to Leicester Tigers.

Melville saw his side toss away a one-point interval lead as they were demolished by the triple title winners, who got their own campaign back on track after suffering an opening-day defeat at Newcastle.

"Basic errors cost us the match," said Melville.

"We had 40 minutes of beating Leicester and the next 40 minutes when we were not.

"But in situations like these you've just got to keep going."

Geordan Murphy charged home for a late double to ensure Leicester victory against a Wasps side who relied on the boot of Kenny Logan for their points.

Tim Stimpson also grabbed a brace, with Ben Kay and Glenn Gelderbloom crossing to ensure a maximum points haul for the home side.

Austin Healey emerged from the bench after an hour to rousing cheers from the Tigers support just two days after he was hit by a £2,000 fine for 'bringing the Lions tour party into disrepute'.

"Even before we brought the big guns on Wasps started to crack," said a delighted Tigers coach Dean Richards.

"I am more than delighted with the result."
