Tigers favourites to retain euro crown
September 26, 2001

Leicester have been installed as clear favourites to make rugby union history this season by retaining the Heineken Cup.

The Tigers, who were crowned European champions last term following an unforgettable 34-30 victory against Stade Francais in Paris, begin the defence of their title when Llanelli arrive at Welford Road on Saturday.

And bookmakers William Hill rate them a 9/4 chance to lift the trophy again - a feat no other team has achieved - with Stade 13/2 second favourites and Munster on 7/1.

Wasps are the second-most fancied English club - a distant 18/1 shot - while Cardiff (16/1) head the Welsh challenge. Italian challengers Treviso and Calvisano are 500/1 rank outsiders.
