Sarries take no prisoners
October 6, 2001

Saracens ripped Dinamo Bucharest apart as they went on an 11-try spree in Romania to jump to the top of Pool Eight.

Four Saracens players helped themselves to two tries apiece as the Londoners completely overwhelmed their hosts 75-12.

Saracens set out their stall from the kick-off, running in three tries in the first 17 minutes and never looking back.

Full-back Brett Sparg, centre Kevin Sorrell and winger Richard Haughton were the scorers.

Sorrell bounded through for his second try just before half-time while Dinamo could only answer with a try from flanker George Pasache.

In the second half their other wingman Darragh O'Mahony snapped up the first two tries - and there were further scores for Khalio Benazzi, Gerald Arasa, Kieran Roche and second tries for Haughton and Sparg.

Rampant Gloucester had the game in the bag against Gran Parma by half time as they rattled up 27 points without reply before winning 48-5.

Number eight James Forrester and James Simpson-Daniel grabbed two tries apiece.

The Italians could not cope with the powerful Gloucester pack who steam-rollered the opposition - front row forward Olivier Azam and centre Cristian Stoica also went over for tries.

Connacht flanker Johnny O'Connor has been banned for three weeks after being sent off in his province's 20-10 Pool Four victory at Roma.

The 21-year-old back row forward was dismissed by Welsh referee Nigel Owens after being advised by his touch judge that O'Connor had kicked a Roma player "in the backside" after being pulled back.

Winger Wayne Munn and hooker Marnus Uijs went over for tries for Connnacht with Eric Elwood posting both conversions and a penalty.

Roma could only find a penalty in their locker as a reply with Anthony Merlo the scorer.

The second half was much more even as Olympic came back into the game with a try from winger Fabio Roselli converted by Merlo.

Connacht could only manage a Mark McHugh penalty but they had done enough in the first half to win.

Pontypridd broke their duck in Pool Three as they outplayed leaders Overmach Parma 31-10 at Sardis Road.

Outside half Ceri Sweeney grabbed a personal haul of 21 points with a try, two conversions and four penalties.

Pontypridd led 18-7 at half time and never looked like losing even though the Italians were not walkover opposition.

Flanker Richard Parks and winger Richard Johnston went over for the other Pontypridd tries.

Overmach's try came from full-back Leone Larini while Corrado Pilat added their goal and Samuele Pace cracked a drop goal.

Petrarca full-back Marco Baroni joined in the attack for a four-try haul as his side crushed Madrid 41-12 in Pool Two.
