Callard grateful for Voyce focus
October 6, 2001

Tom Voyce was the toast of the Bath dressing room after his hat-trick of tries in Saturday's 38-9 Pool Three Heineken Cup victory over Swansea at the Recreation Ground.

Even so coach Jon Callard revealed afterwards that Voyce's team-mates had delivered a stern dressing-down to the wing earlier this season.

"He was talking about playing for England rather than thinking about playing for Bath after winning his first cap on the summer tour," said Callard.

"He got a kick up the backside, and I must say he's responded magnificently.

"After the England experience perhaps he didn't realise the level of work that was needed to sustain it.

"He played very well last season and showed his predatory instincts. But he didn't come back to the club with the right work ethic - and I'm not blaming England for that."

Voyce's form is in sharp contrast to the lacklustre performances of right-wing Iain Balshaw.

Callard was surprised, meanwhile, that Swansea were not more aggressive up front.

He conceded being top of the pool is a satisfying experience but added: "We've still got to go to Swansea and Edinburgh and play Biarritz here.

"I'm just pleased at this stage that we played two and won two."
