Henry sparks new Lions war of words
October 7, 2001

British & Irish Lions coach Graham Henry, who fined tourists Matt Dawson and Austin Healey for outspoken comments during this summer's tour to Australia, has added to the controversy with the serialisation of his tour diary in a British tabloid newspaper.

Henry is set to release his version of events in his book 'Henry's Pride - Inside the Lions' later this month but extracts published in The Sunday Mirror may reignite the war of words between the players and their coach.

Henry accuses scrum-half Dawson of "betraying trust, and betraying your mates for 30 pieces of silver", but he may be fielding similar accusations after striking his serialisation deal.

In the extract however Henry appears to have sympathy for Austin Healey instead saving his venom for journalist and 'ghost-writer' of Healey's columns, Eddie Butler.

"It had the touch of a saboteur," Henry said of Butler's handiwork. "It was no great surprise to learn that the guiding hand behind Healey's column was Eddie Butler, a rather gleeful ex-Wales international and a 'journalist'. At a disciplinary hearing after the tour, Healey was dismayed. He said he did not write the article, nor did he say, or agree with, what it said.

"Butler made sure the article would do maximum damage. It was hard to ignore the michievious, destructive intent."

Henry virtually excuses Healey. "Although he had to take some responsibility, I had a lot of sympathy for him. I could see it was causing him genuine distress because the mind and the motivation behind the column were all Butler's. Healey had, without doubt, been used."

Of Dawson's column, which he wrote himself, in which he criticised Henry's coaching methods and team morale, Henry commented, "The timing of that article [the day of the first Test] was unbelievable," says Henry. "None of the players wanted to leave the tour, and anyone who knows me also knows I'm not the type to rant and rave before a match."

"It was astonishing that a player of his experience should be the one to speak out in such a manner. He added to the feeling that individuals were inflating the needs of their own egos well beyond any sense of the team. Matt had become frustrated through having to sit behind Rob Howley."
