Boks squad confirmed
October 10, 2001

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen today confirmed his 35-strong squad invited for the national training session in Durban on Sunday.

Conflicting squads have been identified in newspaper reports and Springbok communications manager Mark Keohane attributed the confusion to media speculation about the composition of the end of year touring squad.

"The identity of the 35 players has not changed. The unions were informed of the identity of the players last Friday and subsequent to this there has been varying media speculation," said Keohane.

"The squad contains 25 of the 26 players who made up the Springbok squad for the final Tri-nations test in Auckland, plus an additional 10 players the coach wants to assess."

Butch James, ruled out of rugby for the next six months, has not been included.

"Harry has made it clear that a player not invited to the Sunday session can still make the Bok squad for the one-off tests against France, Italy, England and the United States. He meets with the national selectors on Sunday evening and he wanted more clarity about specific players prior to the meeting."

The Springbok squad (of 26), an SA 'A' squad (of 26) and the SA under 23 squad (of 22 players) will be announced after the completion of the Bankfin Currie Cup semi-finals on October 20.

Squad (for Sunday): Conrad Jantjes, Percy Montgomery, Thinus Delport, Dean Hall, Breyton Paulse, Pieter Rossouw, Frederich Lombard, Deon Kayser, Andre Snyman, Robbie Fleck, Marius Joubert, Wayne Julies, Trevor Halstead, Adrian Jacobs, Braam van Straaten, Louis Koen, Joost van der Westhuizen, Neil de Kock, Bob Skinstad, Andre Venter, Andre Vos, Corne Krige, Joe van Niekerk, AJ Venter, Albert van den Berg, Mark Andrews, Victor Matfield, Johan Ackermann, Cobus Visagie, Robbie Kempson, Willie Meyer, Ollie le Roux, Toks van der Linde, John Smit and Lukas van Biljon.
