Dawson signs new deal with Exiles
October 11, 2001

London Irish have signed flanker Kieron Dawson to a new four year deal that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2005/06 season.

Dawson, 26, who has been capped 14 times by Ireland, joined London Irish in 1996 from his home club, Bangor in County Down. He has played 95 first class games for Irish and scored seven tries.

Universally respected as one of the best openside flankers in the Zurich Premiership, Dawson is in the Irish squad for the game against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

Dawson, who recovered from a career-threatening injury earlier this year, is currently in great form for London Irish and has played a key role in the club's good start to the season. (Played six: four wins, one draw, one loss).

Commenting on his decision to sign a new contract with London Irish, Kieron said "London Irish's stated objective is to be not only one of the best club's in England but also in Europe, I want to play a part in achieving that. The club now has a rugby management structure in place that I believe can deliver that objective.

"With the Irish provinces doing so well in Europe, the many first and second generation young Irish people in this country need a club that they can support and be part of," Dawson continued. "It is important therefore that the century old tradition of Irish internationals playing for London Irish continues and I am proud to be part of that."

Brendan Venter, player/coach at London Irish said, "We need real world class players in the squad if we are to succeed in winning the Premiership. It is vital that we retain players like Kieron if we are to achieve that objective."
