England captain Martin Johnson will miss England's Six Nations clash with Ireland in Dublin after breaking a bone in his left hand in a club match on Saturday.

Johnson was taken to hospital after leaving the field during his side Leicester's 21-11 English Premiership victory over Northampton.

England coach Clive Woodward was part of the crowd which saw Johnson watch the second half from the Leicester dug-out with ice packed tightly around his left wrist.

Woodward conceded later Saturday that England would have to try to win the grand slam against Ireland next Saturday without his skipper.

"I'm disappointed for Martin. He broke a bone in his hand during today's Zurich Premiership fixture and we wish him a speedy recovery," said Woodward.
