Melville fears the boot
October 14, 2001

Wasps coach Nigel Melville admitted he is likely to be booted out of Loftus Road unless he can launch an instant revival to the Londoners' ailing fortunes.

Melville's side are anchored to the foot of the Premiership table following their 20-15 home defeat by London Irish on Sunday afternoon.

Wasps were forced to rely on the boot of Kenny Logan for their points, Paul Sackey's sole try for the visitors proving the difference after Irish stand-off Barry Everitt had landed five kicks of his own.

After securing just one win all season, Melville hinted that he had been warned that unless there is a dramatic about-turn in fortunes, he is likely to be out of a job by the end of the month.

"No points means no job by November," he said.

"My job is on the line and I'm not performing well."

"It's not okay but I'm doing my job but it seems I'm a bad coach."

Melville's side now face Bristol on Sunday, then try to resurrect their dismal Heineken Cup campaign against Italian minnows Treviso the following week.

And, with skipper Lawrence Dallaglio out until the New Year after a cruciate knee ligament operation, Melville's options look to have been further weakened by the loss of England squad man Josh Lewsey with what his coach admitted 'looks like a broken jaw'.

"We didn't take our opportunities," added an aggrieved Melville, who also claimed that his team were denied an obvious penalty late in the game which could have seen his team snatch the game.

"What's the point of miking-up the officials when they don't contact with each other. I complained to the touch judge and he agrees with me."
