Davies full of praise for Parks
October 14, 2001

Leeds coach Phil Davies paid tribute to stand-in fly-half Dan Parks for his match-winning performance against Saracens at Headingley.

Parks was drafted into the fold after the Tykes lost both Steve Bachop and Richard le Bas to injury and to bridge the gap before the arrival of South Africa international Braam Van Straaten.

But the 23-year-old went a long way to claiming the Tykes number 10 jersey for himself, slotting over two second-half drop goals and orchestrating a Leeds side who never allowed their more illustrious opponents to settle.

"He's been good," said Davies after the 27-14 victory, only their second in the Premiership.

"I've known about him for six or seven months and it was good to give him an opportunity to come and play for us.

"It was unfortunate at the start of the season with Bachop going down in the second game, and obviously Le Bas, but it was an ideal opportunity.

"He's the right kind of player that we want at the club. He's an excellent footballer and dominates the position.

"Today he orchestrated things really well and I'm pleased with that," added the former Wales lock.

Parks operated behind a Leeds pack that was outstanding. They pressurised Saracens from the kick-off, winning ball against the head and not allowing the Londoners to settle.

"I was pleased with that," added Davies. "We have worked hard on the scrum since the Northampton game, where we were given a real lesson."

Saracens were forced to concede a penalty in the opening exchanges after being driven off the ball from a scrum.

And director of rugby, Francois Pienaar believes that was when the game was lost.

"We lost the game in the first minute," he said. "We knew they'd be tough. They've got a big pack, very mobile.

"I was impressed how they did their basics, they didn't take any risks. I think its a big learning experience for some of them.

"We didn't show the experience we have in the team."
