Van Zyl off to Bristol
October 16, 2001

Western Province and Stormers scrumhalf Dan van Zyl has become the latest player to leave for the greener pastures that is England when he agreed a deal with Zurich Premiership club Bristol on Monday.

The emergence of youngsters Neil de Kock and Johannes Conradie at Newlands has seen the former Springbok tourist fall out of favour to such an extent that he was omitted from next year's Western Province squad.

Bristol made an approach for the much-travelled Van Zyl on Thursday, but according to his agents Icon Sports Management, they first wanted clearance from both the South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu) and Western Province before sealing the deal, thus avoiding another Joost van der Westhuizen/Newport saga.

Van Zyl will leave for England after the Currie Cup and will be on a one-month trail period at Bristol from November 5 to December 3, after which a longer deal will be arranged.
