Paul takes a belated union bow
October 17, 2001

Former Bradford Bulls star Henry Paul kept his new bosses at Gloucester waiting for two and a half hours on Wednesday on the first day of his conversion to rugby union.

Embarrassed chiefs at Gloucester had laid on a 1pm lunch date for Paul to be introduced to team-mates, officials and the media.

But the appointed time came and went with no sign of the 27-year-old New Zealand rugby sensation.

News reached Gloucester that he had found himself minus his car and his mobile phone when he got up on Wednesday morning and had been delayed in setting off from Bradford to Kingsholm.

He finally turned up at 3.30pm in a borrowed car.

The explanation was that during his three days of celebrating the Bradford Bulls' Super League Grand Final victory over the Wigan Warriors last weekend he had loaned the car - with his mobile still in it - to a friend who had failed to return it as arranged.

Gloucester boss Tom Walkinshaw and managing director Ken Nottage were among those left hanging around at Kingsholm half the afternoon awaiting the arrival of their record signing.
