Hodgson takes record in his stride

Man-of-the-match Charlie Hodgson was stunned by his own performance on international debut which brought him 44 points in England's 134-0 romp against Romania at Twickenham.

The 21-year-old Sale fly-half almost broke the world individual points-scoring record in the last seconds - but his conversion kick bounced off the left-hand post.

"It has just been a dream come true," he told Sky Sports 2.

"I didn't expect to score two tries on debut and score all those points. It's hard to say how well I played.

"I'm very pleased with my performance. I'm speechless. It has been tremendous.

"The work rate off the ball made my job a lot easier, and occasionally there was a gap to go through which I exploited.

"It was good to get one penalty out of the way early on and get on with the rest of the game."

Hodgson's club and international team-mate Jason Robinson added: "It was a good day for us.

"Our mandate was to stop them scoring, and we managed to do that. Everyone today enjoyed it, and it was a good professional team performance."

England coach Clive Woodward, after rebuffing critics following the victory over Australia last weekend, said he was pleased that everything his team have been practising came off.

"I was delighted. I thought the performance was outstanding, ruthless.

"Neil Back kept everyone very focused, and Charlie has run the whole show all week."

Woodward said Hodgson's performance had pleased him and he had no worries about throwing him into the action in future games should first-choice Jonny Wilkinson become injured.

"Charlie was outstanding. Against Australia I would have been concerned about putting him on but today I thought he played wonderfully well. He had loads of time," he added.
