Sweet revenge for SA 'A'
November 22, 2001

The South African 'A' team scored their second consecutive victory on their European tour when they easily accounted for the English Divisional XV in Worcester on Wednesday night.

Coach Allister Coetzee's charges won 33-9, in the process avenging the defeat of the Springboks midweek team on last year's tour. This was a good win for South Africa's second stringers as the Divisional XV gave the Wallabies a tough time in Leicester earlier this month before going down 34-22.

The English were off to a good start against South Africa 'A' and kept them on the back foot with some aggressive driving play. They looked a good bet to repeat their victory of last year when they fought back to 14-9 in the second half, but then the South Africans found their rhythm and started to play as a unit.

The English couldn't deal with the sustained pressure and in the end the visitors ran out deserved victors.

The South Africans scored four tries to nil. Exciting centre Marius Joubert (pictured) scored the try in the fist half after a good build up by his team. Natal Sharks flyhalf Gaffie du Toit slotted two penalties and Simon Binns one for the home team to make the half-time score 11-3.

Another penalty by Du Toit and two more by Binns made the score 14-9 with twenty minutes to play. Then the South Africans clicked into fifth gear and started to control proceedings. They enjoyed a glut of possession and only mistakes at critical moments prevented them from scoring more tries.

Du Toit scored two tries and Joubert his second in the second half onslaught. Du Toit converted two of the tries.

The South Africans can be forgiven for looking lethargic in the first half. They were still suffering the consequences of their long journey from Tarbes, where they played against Georgia last Sunday. From Tarbes they travelled to Tblisi, from where they had a 5½-hour flight to London followed by a three-hour coach journey to Worcester. They arrived in Worcester at 15:00 on Tuesday.

Soon after arriving at their hotel it was off to the stadium for the captain's practice - the only team session for the game against the English Divisional XV. The South Africans last tour match is on Sunday against Spain in Seville and another good performance is expected.

Scorers:

South Africa A - Tries: Marius Joubert (2), Gaffie du Toit (2); Conversions: Du Toit (2); Penalties: Du Toit (3).

English National Division XV - Penalties: Simon Binns (3).
