Wasps' Melville hones in on England U21s
December 5, 2001
Nigel Melville, Wasps' director of rugby, has been appointed part-time coach of the England Under-21s. Chris Spice, performance director for the Rugby Football Union, said: "Nigel's previous experience of coaching the England Under-21 side will be invaluable and I know he's looking forward to a good campaign in the spring." Melville said: "I really enjoyed working with the Under-21 squad last season and I'm sure there will be a number of players who will not only give a good account of themselves during the new campaign but who will also be challenging for senior squad in the future." Meanwhile Damian McGrath has switched codes and taken up a new role as defence coach for the England A and Sevens teams. McGrath, who played rugby league for Swinton and Batley, will report to Spice and said: "Having spent a considerable amount of time coaching in rugby league, the move to union presents me with a huge challenge." Spice added: "Damian's appointment underlines the commitment to developing all the England representative sides. He joins us at a time when we have some significant challenges ahead with the A games in the spring and the IRB World Sevens Series and Commonwealth Games next year." |
