Sarries look to boost Romania
December 7, 2001

Saracens will continue their efforts to boost Romanian rugby this weekend at their clash with Newcastle and our asking fans to play their part.

In their initiative supported by British Airways, Saracens have invited all those coming to the game this Sunday to bring any spare kit, for the SOS Romanian Rugby kit appeal.

At one time, Romanian rugby was a healthy sport enjoyed by young and old at all levels, but sadly the number of competitive senior teams in the country is down to only 28 from an all-time high of 110. Including schools and colleges, there used to be more than 12,000 players, now there are barely 4,000, and this figure is on the slide.

Players are not the only thing lacking in Romanian rugby, kit is too. This is why Saracens are inviting supporters, schools and clubs to donate rugby kit on the day to the appeal. In return, every child bringing kit for the appeal will be given free admission to the game.

British Airways have kindly agreed to transport the amassed kit over to Romania free of charge, to the which the appeal is very grateful.

As for the game itself Sarries chief executive Francois Pienaar commented, "We've now completed 10 games in the Zurich Premiership, leaving 12 still to be played. This means that there are another 60 points up for grabs. There is no doubt that this is a crucial time in the season for us.

"The team to play Newcastle on Sunday is not too different from the one that took on Bristol last weekend. Richard Hill, who withdrew from the starting line-up last week due to a stomach bug returns, and will give the rest of the squad a great boost."
